Before we dive in headfirst, let’s put a journey to the Galapagos into context in terms of travel logistics and timings.
International Flights
Galapagos visitors must first travel to Ecuador.
From the USA, this can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, direct from Miami or New York, respectively. Other direct US-Ecuador flight routes are from Fort Lauderdale, Houston, and Atlanta

Flights to Galapagos
How to get to the Galapagos Islands? Galapagos flight routes operate from 2 mainland cities in Ecuador: Quito and Guayaquil.
The Galapagos Islands are approximately 1,329 km (825 miles) from mainland Ecuador.
Daily flights from the Ecuador mainland to the Galapagos depart early morning, with a journey time of 2-3 hours.
Return flights from Galapagos to mainland Ecuador typically depart in the morning, too.
Many visitors overlook the logistical implications of these flight times. On day 1, you’ll arrive in the Galapagos late morning, allowing ½ day to explore. On the final day, you’ll need an early start to get to the airport and check in, so don’t count on any activities that day.
The Galapagos Archipelago is huge!
Few visitors appreciate the overall size of the Galapagos archipelago.
Consisting of 13 major islands, over 40 smaller islands, and many more rocky outcrops, the archipelago is huge.

In fact, the Galapagos Marine Reserve covers a total area of 198,000 square kilometers (about 76,400 square miles), and is the 2nd largest on the planet after the Great Barrier Reef.
Travel logistics therefore dictate that most travelers will visit only part of the archipelago rather than every island.
Getting around Galapagos
How to get around between the islands in Galapagos?
Cruises visit different islands each day on set itineraries. Land tour itineraries or DIY trips, on the other hand, are restricted to the large, inhabited islands, but trip itineraries are customizable.
Careful trip planning is strongly recommended to choose the best trip type and itinerary to suit your travel group.
Some important considerations in trip planning include:
· How many days in total do you have for your vacation?
· Do you want to see everything at Galapagos, or just the main highlights?
· What type of Galapagos trip do you have in mind? Cruise vs Land Trip.
· What are your Galapagos goals? Do you have a general wildlife checklist or specific animal targets in mind?
· Are there any other places you’d like to include in your Ecuador trip, such as the Amazon Rainforest, Andean Sierra region, or Cloud Forest?
· How fast or slow do you prefer to travel?
· How much downtime and freedom do you typically like to include in a vacation?

How many days to visit the Galapagos?
Now that you’ve taken the above Galapagos journey logistics into account and considered your vacation goals, we’re ready to dive in … how many days to spend at the Galapagos?
Please note, my personal recommendations below all refer to the number of days at Galapagos, from day 1 flying out there from Ecuador, to the final day returning to mainland Ecuador. International flight days or overnights in Ecuador are not considered.

From a Galapagos destination expert todayWhat are the minimum days required to visit Galapagos?
For cruisers, the shortest Galapagos cruise itinerary is 4 days / 3 nights.
Similarly, on a Galapagos land tour, 4 days is doable if you stay on just 1 island.
However, I personally do NOT recommend a 4-day Galapagos trip.
Remember, the first and last days at the islands are cut short by the flight schedules, so a 4-day trip ends up as just 2 full days in the middle to enjoy.
Not only will 4 days feel very rushed, but you’ll barely be scratching the surface of the Galapagos Islands.
I would therefore recommend 5 days as the minimum itinerary time for a Galapagos trip.
A 5-day cruise, for example, will focus on a specific region of the archipelago, usually south-east or central-north, for a solid introduction to Galapagos animals, birds, and geology.
On a land trip, you’ll have time to stay on 2 different islands for 5 days. The Isabela Island Hopper is a good example, overnighting on both Isabela and Santa Cruz islands.
Even though 5 days is the recommended minimum, if you do have more time and budget, then definitely try to stay for longer.

How many days are Recommended for Galapagos?
How many days for Galapagos is standard? Most people visit the Galapagos for 6 to 8 days.
While you may not tick off all of the wildlife, and you won’t get to see every island, 1 week or so is a happy balance of enjoying a selection of the best Galapagos highlights without feeling rushed.
Most Galapagos cruise yachts offer 6 or 8 day live-aboard itineraries. The easiest way to choose is by checking our online cruise search for your dates of travel, filtering the results by number of itinerary days. Popular land trips include our 6-day Galapagos Discovery and 8-day Galapagos Explorer itineraries. We can also help you to personalize a Galapagos itinerary to your needs.
How many days for a comprehensive trip to the Galapagos?
How about travelers who want to see it all, with no time or budget constraints? How many days are needed for a comprehensive Galapagos vacation?
I recommend a Galapagos trip length of between 10 to 15 days.
Cruise itineraries of this length are available on all Galapagos yachts. It’s just a matter of combining shorter yacht itineraries into a longer 10-, 12-, or 15-day trip. For example, an 8-day itinerary combined with a 4-day itinerary becomes 12-days aboard the same yacht whilst visiting different islands.
Another interesting combo is to merge an 8-day cruise together with some free days by yourselves in a Galapagos hotel afterwards, giving you time to explore with more flexibility and freedom.
What’s the advantage of a long, comprehensive Galapagos itinerary?
The more islands you visit, the greater diversity of habitats and wildlife you’ll cross paths with. Given the vacation expense of getting to and from the archipelago, why not spend as much time there as you possibly can?

How many days do I need to visit Galapagos by myself?
So far, we’ve talked exclusively about cruising or land trips. What about those who prefer to visit by themselves, without a pre-booked travel itinerary?
The beauty of DIY Galapagos travel is the flexibility it affords, and the opportunity to change plans as you go.
So, how many days at Galapagos are optimal if going it alone?
I’d recommend 2-3 days on each of the main islands, Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, and Isabela. That’s enough days to explore the beaches & visitor sites on each island, with time for relaxation too.
So, for example, with 4 or 5 days to play with, it may be best to stick to just 1 main island. With 8 to 10 days, you could stay on 2 or even 3 of the main islands.
The intra-island Galapagos ferries make it easy to get around, and are easy to book once there.
