Itinerary

DAY 1 QUICHUA COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES (LD)
An early departure from Quito to Cotacachi. The community adventure begins with the ritual preparation of Pachamanka, a sacred Andean cooking tradition where potatoes, meats, fruits, corn, beans, and peas are buried underground with glowing volcanic stones. While the food slowly, you’ll visit the local alpaca project to learn about the cultural and economic importance of alpacas in Andean life. The afternoon is for local art and culture. You’ll visit Sumak Muyu, a women’s artisan collective creating exquisite tagua jewelry, and a group of skilled embroiderers preserving Andean textile art. Overnight homestay in the San Martin community.
DAY 2 SHAMAN CEREMONY & OTAVALO AREA (BD)
The morning begins with a purification ceremony led by a local yachak (shaman medicine healer) at the sacred site called Tundun. This spiritual bath offers a chance to renew your energy, reflect, and reconnect with Mother Earth (pachamama). The rest of day sees time to visit popular tourist destinations in this area of Imbabura, including famous Otavalo handicrafts market, the sacred waterfall of Peguche, and some local workshops for textile weaving and Andean musical instruments. Overnight homestay in San Martin community.
DAY 3 HIKING AROUND CUICOCHA LAKE (B)
Today we’ll hit the trail on one of the best day hikes in all Ecuador – the Cuicocha Crater Lake circuit in the Cotacachi-Cayapas National Park. The 15km hike takes around 4 to 5-hours with countless photo opportunities along the way. The route climbs from 3,060 to 3,450 meters above sea level, reaching its highest point with spectacular views of Cotacachi, Imbabura, and Cayambe volcanoes on clear days. After completing the hike, we’ll transfer to Cotacachi, a small town renowned for its exquisite leather products. After a lunch stop, we’ll return to Quito, arriving in the late afternoon.
