Itinerary
DAY 1 MOUNTAIN BIKING COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK (-)
An early start for your journey south to the slopes of Cotopaxi Volcano, the highest active volcano on the planet. It’s downhill biking most of the way, along dirt roads through a landscape of volcanic ash and Andean paramo grasslands, finishing up by picturesque Limpiopungo Lake and pine forest. Overnight in Isinlivi Village, in the heart of the Andes.
DAY 2 HIKING TO CHUGCHILAN (B)
Day hiking is the best way to experience Ecuador’s rural way of life, passing through indigenous communities, and meeting locals along the trail. Today’s scenic hike of aprox 5 hours takes you from the village of Isinlivi to Chugchilan.
DAY 3 HIKING TO QUILOTOA CRATER LAKE (B)
Today you’ll take on the iconic day trek from Chugchlian village to Quilotoa Crater Lake. Your reward at the end of the trail is the sublime view of the turquoise waters of Quilotoa lake, surrounded on all sides by steep volcanic walls. This is one of the hidden gems of the Ecuadorian highlands! Overnight in Baños town.
DAY 4 BAÑOS WATERFALLS & ACTIVITY (B)
Baños is a famous resort town surrounded by lush mountains and rivers. We’ll spend the morning exploring the Valley of the Waterfalls, including the breathtaking Pailon del Diablo Falls (Devil’s Cauldron). In the afternoon, you can choose between horse riding or canyoning in the surrounding mountains.
DAY 5 ONTO THE AMAZON RAINFOREST (BLD)
It’s a 2-3 hour descent by road from Baños to Tena in the Amazon Rainforest, where we’ll connect onto a canoe transfer to Anaconda Lodge. After lunch, your jungle adventure begins with a visit to the Caiman Lagoon in search of wildlife.
DAY 6 FOREST HIKE, RIVER TUBING, & CHOCOLATE (BLD)
This morning is about jungle immersion. During a 3 hours guided hike through the forest you can spot birds, insects, and with luck perhaps monkeys. You can also learn about medicinal plants of the forest. Later, after returning to the Lodge, enjoy river tubing on the Arajuno river. Today’s final fun activity is to learn about the chocolate-making process from bean to bar using 100% organic Ecuadorian cocoa.
DAY 7 RAFTING & HOT SPRINGS (BL)
For our final jungle experience we’ll be white-water rafting on the Jatunyacu River, perfect for beginners and experienced adventurers. After checking our equipment (life jackets, helmet, etc) and a safety briefing we can hit the river. It’s adrenaline all the way through rapids, forest, & hidden canyons, with aprox 4 hours in the rafts.
Heading back into the mountains towards Quito, we’ll stay the night near Papallacta Hot Springs, for a well-deserved soak in the rejuvenating waters.
DAY 8 ANTISANA RESERVE & QUITO (B)
The final day takes us to off-the-beaten-path Antisana National Park. Here we can enjoy some light hiking, wildlife observation, and (on a clear day) wonderful views of snow-capped Antisana Volcano. Most famously, Antisana is the best spot in Ecuador to watch Andean Condors soaring on thermals, as well as high altitude humming birds. Mid to late afternoon you’ll be dropped back in Quito, where our adventure comes to an end.
