Alpacas roam the slopes of the Cotacachi Volcano. They belong to the indigenous community of Morochos. José Flores, vice-president of the community, says the alpacas are the best friends of the highland moors (páramos).
Ecuador, on the South American Pacific coast and international equator line, values its diverse traditions and enjoys a great deal of self-sufficiency. Probably a majority of the population is self-employed.
